Chia is a well known “superfood” that’s been around for decades.

Actually- it is an ancient Aztec grain known from around 3500 bc(!).

Apparently in Mayan- “chia” means “strength”. there you go. so simple.
I think it is fair to say that Everybody knows what chia is and how beneficial it is to eat it.

So what now? why this sudden retro all of a sudden??

Well, I actually stopped using chia seeds in my smoothies since they stuck to the Vitamix bowl and wouldn’t let go no matter what.

Plus they changed the taste and consistency of the smoothy to something very jello-like.

Matter of taste, I know.
The thing is, a couple of weeks ago I became aware of a simple method that changed the chia game for me, and being a generous human being, I am sharing, so all of you can go back to devouring chia like monsters.you are more than welcome.

*there is this vegan doctor I saw on youtube that keeps calling everyone “my beloveds”. maybe I should do that too.

(Naaaa. no way. can’t keep a straight face even while writing this, sorry. )

Actually-devouring chia like monsters isn’t an absolutely good idea , since I’ve learned that too much chia is not a good idea: chia absorbs water quickly and effectively, and becomes jelly-like not only in a chia pudding jar but also in your stomach…

My youngest son is turning 15 in a few months and has decided he wants to build more muscle. he is lean though wasn’t very fit until a few months ago when he suddenly (and independently- I swear I had nothing to do with this) got it into his teenager mind that health and nutrition is actually a thing.

Since this transition fills me with utter joy and gives me something to discuss with him other than “mom, you’re old, stop it” and “not funny mom, bye”, I dived right into this challenge, and started looking for nutritious protein-packed foods that he will eat.

Mind you he is not vegan, sadly not even vegetarian- yes I know- some people have it all -I see those couples online smiling and cutting turnips with their spouse and enthusiastically going on about what a great life they have with their vegan family eating kale and wild rice.

Not in my house.

Meat and chicken breast, stews, pizza and cheese toasts, omelets and hard-boiled eggs, tuna, and sushi. yep. the whole shebang.

As I have told you before, I know my family well enough to understand that starting a war on this subject will only make them cave in and refuse to try the vegan options I sneak in from time to time.

I am so confident in my vegan path that I don’t give a damn if they are on board with me or not (yet), and I don’t think less of them for not “seeing the light”. (yet).

Back to the chia.

So my son said he would like to get back to adding chia seeds to the smoothies, and added that the protein in chia seeds is very high (true that! in 100 grams of chia seeds there are 17 grams of protein- that’s 100% more then tofu, 50% more then eggs, the same as oats, and almost as much as meat (well ok not almost as much but not very far- 100 grams of red meat has 26 grams of protein- I would say, distant relatives).

But what about that sticky thing?

I suddenly remembered that while serving on my last Vipassana course, I met this girl who brought chia seeds and mixed them in a bowl, added water and kept it in the fridge.

She said this mixture can keep for up to a week in the fridge.

I tried this- and discovered that the water intake of the seeds is amazing- I kept adding water to the chia ixture every morning because the consistency of the chia pudding got so thick during the night.

By the way, I store the mixture in a glass jar. just saying. in case you were interested or something.

I am well aware that this is how you make chia pudding, but the trick here is not to eat it as pudding, but to use it for every other use you would use dry chia seeds.
*I personally don’t like chia pudding on its own so this way I get to enjoy the benefits of the wonder seed, it doesn’t stick to the Vitamix- since it already absorbed a lot of water, it doesn’t alter the taste of the smoothy- for the same reason, plus- it quadruples the amount of chia you can get out of a 300 gram pack- since it quadruples in size when it absorbs the water. (can’t get away from the frugal point).

I also made my son “energy treats” raw, no unnecessary baking in this hot summer por favor-

here’s how:

I grounded a cup of oats in my Brown hand mixer.

To the bowl I added raw tahini, (a few tbsp) unsweetened date syrup, (a few tbsp) flax seeds, (guess what- a few tbsp), coconut shreds, (a few what??)and the above mentioned soaked chia seeds, (the same amount) mixed it up to a consistency that is not too tough nor too runny, and allowed me to form these balls, and immediately stuck them in the freezer for good measure.

this way they can keep for a few weeks- not that they get to live that long.

Yes they do stick to each other, I don’t mind as long as they separate amicably.

the protein in oats, tahini, flax, and chia is quite high, and the additional non sweetened date syrup makes this thing a great snack so there you go.

  1. I usually eat 2 tbs for breakfast mixed with oatmeal or natto. Just add extra water to allow for the absorption of the chia.

    And don’t forget Chia fresca (iskiate) from Born to run!

    1. Thank you for reading, commenting and especially for bringing up that great book..I read it a long time ago.cannot and will not run barefoot (love my saucony’s too much ) but the notion of running as a pure natural instict is something I definitely resonate with!

    1. Glad I could be of help! chia is a relatively cheap yet very effective protein source, plus I noticed it keeps me feeling full for quite some hours between meals, which is an accomplishment on its own..
